Content Creation and Replication

Tuesday, September 20th, 2011

I found this amazing statistic whilst researching for a magazine article.

We [mankind] created and shared 23 exabytes of data in 2002 – in 2010, we were sharing 23 exabytes of data every seven days. That’s 1196 exabytes of data in 2010.

Two more stats to put it into perspective:

  • In 2006, we created 161 exabytes of data – “three million times the information contained in all books ever written” – source.
  • In May 2009, it was estimated that “the internet” was only 500 exabytes big – source.
